Get to know Fion, New York based photographer and graphic designer.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
"My name is Fion, and I'm 22 years old. I'm a graphic designer and photographer, originally from Malaysia. I moved to Melbourne when I was 17 to study Communication Design at RMIT university. My work is influenced by fashion, books, film and music. My eyes tear up whenever I have spicy food, and I have too much love for durian and blue cheese."
Tell us more about your creative work?
"Light, colour, and raw moments are my main sources of creative inspiration. For me, photography is less about the technical side, but instead about capturing how I view the world. When people are not aware of the camera, you can capture a lot of personality and honest emotion in a frame.
I feel the most inspired when I take some time off my phone, enjoy daydreaming, and live in the moment. I think a lot of my photos reflect my mood at these times."
When did you move to New York, and why?
"I moved to New York in February this year. I have always tried to welcome spontaneity into my life, as unplanned adventures are what makes life interesting. For me, I feel uninspired when I get too comfortable with my surroundings. I decided to move somewhere new after graduating, as I believed it would help stimulate my creative thinking while I figured out my career. I have no idea where It’s going to take me but that excites me."
How long have you been taking photos for? Do you remember the exact moment you wanted to become a photographer?
"I got into photography accidentally, whilst working on a project for my graphic design course last September. It was here I embarked on my photographic journey, realising how much I love meeting new people through creative collaboration. I feel like I'm having a peek into someone else's life, and I would never met the people I have if not for photography. I hope that by taking photos, people will see a different side of themselves, and that in return I can show them the way I see the world. I want my work to evoke emotion and nostalgia. I like to photograph people that I feel a connection towards. Most of my photography is personal work, and it is the place I find my creative satisfaction apart from my 9 to 5 job."
What is your first memory of making/creating something?
"I was originally studying business before switching to a graphic design major. When I got my first assignment studying design, I was amazed by the artistic freedom we had to express. I learnt that there are no boundaries or limits for creative expressions."
What is your dream job?
"To travel around the world producing photos and films for brands."
